Are There Heart Benefits From Fish Oil Supplements?

Recently I’ve written a lot about the health benefits of taking fish oil supplements, or what is also known as Omega 3 supplements. Lets look today at the heart benefits of fish oil supplements.

There is a new study, the results of which have been published in the Jan/Feb issue of Sports Health, A Multidisciplinary Approach.

This particular study studied the heart benefits of fish oil supplements and it looked at the benefits to the heart of fish oil supplements high in DHA and EPA, the two major Omega 3 fats.

These football players took either fish oil capsules or a placebo, the fish oil capsules containing 2560 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (650 mg EPA and 450 mg DHA in each capsule.) 36 players took part.

The study, or it’s results, backed up the conclusions of so many other studies that supported the health benefits of Omega 3 fish oil supplementation that increased the levels of essential fatty acids in the diet.

The results were good. HDL levels (good cholesterol) went up while LDL (bad cholesterol) went down.

And as well they also found a reduction in overall triglycerides levels.

This is not the only fish oil supplements study to find a link between Omega3 and heart health. There are now numerous studies confirming a range of heart related health benefits of taking fish oil or Omega 3 supplements.

In fact the American Heart Association now recommends the intake of EPA and DHA (the two major beneficial Omega 3 fats) daily, at a dose of 1 gram a day, more for those with elevated triglycerides.

But not all fish oil supplements are the same. Some have different levels of DHA in them and there are also issues with contamination with some heavy metals, PCBs and mercury. Not high levels, but enough to take notice of. The best fish oil supplements have no detectable levels of contaminants, and also a high level of DHA, so are better value, and clean.

So if youre at risk of heart health problems, and who isnt, there are now significant fish oil supplements studies backing up the benefits daily fatty acid supplements. Make sure you get enough fish oils in your diet, every day.
