This particular family of Palm covers 7 species which have a native territory that spreads through Central and South America. The Palm tends to grow in flood land regions. While the Acai is probably most famous for the berries which are considered a “super food” containing a large amount of nutrients and antioxidants.
Acai has found its way into many diets as a great health food. It is sold as a juice, powder, supplement, or even as pulp. The entire palm is used including the leaves which are used for roofing thatch, brooms, baskets, mats, and head coverings.
The wood of the Acai is used for construction because of its high resistance to bugs. Seeds are used for livestock food, soil for plants, even jewelry and souvenirs. The plant even has medicinal properties as an astringent and for gastrointestinal issues.
Acai is used for so many things that it has to be created and grown in abundance. It supplies basically everything nutritional food, materials for structures, and livestock feed. It is a gift from nature that provides many wonders.
It takes a couple months to grow the seeds to seedlings. There are around a thousand berries per palm tree per crop and you can produce two crops a year on mature plants. Forty percent of the diet in this native region make up a dietary staple of Acai in some various form.
